I’ve been thinking recently, since turning 18 and staring down a couple “life decisions”, about the concept of alternate realities. Do our lives really branch out in every direction, where a minute decision could spiral into a completely different life? Or do our intrinsic personalities cause these branches to bend backwards and collapse in on themselves, so you end up where you were supposed to all along?
I had this image in my head of this run down, underground bar, where I sit across the table from another version of myself, someone who had made completely different choices. We’re drawn to each other, we talk about our lives and we share our regrets. At the end of the night, we can leave comforted by the fact that someone else is living the life we could’ve had, and they’re also wondering what could’ve been.

Shift ran long at the hospital
Swear this happens to all my plans
I’m a stranger at the door
But we knew we’d be back here again
Here’s to the last of our last lives
We’re drawn to the other kind
Here’s to the last of our last nights
I’ll take yours and you take mine

We’re dandelions but the wind has blown
It’s been a while since you were my home
I miss you but I’m good at being alone

Why do I keep coming around
Yards full of the pieces of us now
There’s a place only we could’ve found

Sometimes I lay upon the ground
To feel the earth spin upside down
There’s a place where now’s out of bounds
I’ll meet you at the Underground

Boyfriend gave me his credit card
Like I was a given and not a chance
Still took a seat next to you at the bar
Same drink held by different hands

Here’s to the last of our last lives
We’re drawn to the other kind
Let’s swear that after this time
You’ll take yours and I’ll take mine

We’re dandelions but the wind has blown
It’s been a while since you were my home
I miss you but I’m good at being alone

Why do I keep coming around
Yards full of the pieces of us now
There’s a place only we could’ve found

Sometimes I lay upon the ground
To feel the earth spin upside down
There’s a place where now’s out of bounds
I’ll meet you at the Underground

Watch me
Reflected in your one drink
Touch me
Pull away you can’t think
Love me
But not quite enough to want me in both versions of right now

Why do I keep coming around
Yards full of the pieces of us now
There’s a place only we could’ve found

Sometimes I lay upon the ground
To feel the earth spin upside down
There’s a place where now’s out of bounds
I’ll meet you at the Underground
